5 Year Plan
Writing Prompt:
Write a summary which returns to your instrumental and missional goals by:
My goal is to review my philosophy of education and have stronger missional goals rather than soley instrumental goals. I have reviewed the curriculum and have focused my exploration of tools around the mechanics curriculum. For example I am putting my VR project(s) on pause and I am focusing on 2D motion tracking that aligns more with the curriculum I am teaching. This summer I will be part of the "Computational Modeling in Physics First" project to develop curriculum for teaching computer modeling using the Modeling Physics Curriculum for Freshmen. This technology tool will directly enhance my physics instruction rather than adding something new.
My other missional goal is to encourage student learning through student-led discourse. Tools such as google classroom has allowed students to share their work before an in-class discussion so they can prepare and feel more confident. We also practice discussions online and can reflect on the digitally-recorded conversation. I have also started using class dojo in a new way. I include myself in the class and give myself points every time I talk so that I can keep track of how much I am talking in the discussion. The goal would be to see my own participation decrease as student participation increases.
I am anticipating that there will be change in the number of students I have per class next year, that I will have to share a classroom next year, and I will have to mentor two new science teachers in our department. It will be much more important next year that I flip my instruction so I have more time during class for smaller group conversations with my students. To prepare for sharing a classroom, I can be more organized so students and teachers know where to locate and return all the various supplies we have. To prepare for mentoring, I can dedicate and schedule time for collaboration and be more organized in my curriculum documents. I can be proactive and start communicating with them now.
My PLN is mostly CPS teachers that I have met through professional developments. My PLN includes some Illinois college and physics teachers from attending AAPT meetings. I would like to dig deeper into the teachers at my school in other content areas such as English. They do a wonderful job a providing writing structures and facilitating discussions. Racially, my PLN would mostly identify as white. I would also like to broaden my PLN to include IB physics teachers in other states and countries.
Write a summary which returns to your instrumental and missional goals by:
- Restating and possibly revising your goals.
- Describing where were you looking to anticipate change?
- Explaining what is the diversity measure of your network? Remember to think in terms of your PLN.
- Exploring in what ways (if any) you feel courageous enough to abandon the past?
